Welcome
From Penny Dash, Chair NHS England
The role of the non-executive director within the NHS is incredibly important. That is why we are prioritising a campaign to reach new people to invite you to express interest in becoming a first-time NHS non-executive director.
Many people who are NHS non-executive directors and chairs tell me it is the most rewarding role they have ever done. The NHS matters to everyone and these roles offer an intellectual challenge with the opportunity to make a real difference to a service which touches the lives of everyone. The non-executive role on boards involves being part of a unitary board and holding the executive to account in managing the organisation.
Non-executives are typically accomplished individuals from a wide range of professional backgrounds, with experience in leading or managing large or complex organisations. Building on their professional experience, our non-executives also bring the ability to understand a range of metrics, can scrutinise finance and quality data and build strong relationships with executives and expert professionals to provide appropriate support and challenge to board colleagues.

We are looking for people from professional backgrounds including clinical, customer experience, finance and audit, operations, property and estates, digital, technology and AI, data and analytics, strategy, change management, and workforce. This includes leaders from public and private sectors, entrepreneurs and people who may have led charities or social enterprises.
We are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds with appropriate professional experience.
If you think you might be interested in taking on one of these roles, which are part-time, paid and typically 3-4 days per month, please consider the information on this website to find out more and see whether a non-executive role within the NHS might be for you.
We look forward to hearing from you.
